Water Project to Benefit Greenup Residents

GREENUP, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear announced funding Friday for a water project in the City of Greenup.

The Community Block Development Grant, totaling $885,000, allows for the extension of Greenup water lines.

The grant will go toward funding the design and construction of approximately 26 miles of water lines, a 115,000 gallon water storage tank and booster pump station.

"All Kentuckians—regardless of where they live—must have access to a constant source of clean, usable, potable water," said Gov. Beshear

The grant will benefit some 300 Greenup residents.

According to a news release, residents in that area say they have poor water quality and limited quantity.

54-percent of surveyed households report their wells regularly go dry and 57 percent report having been without water, often for weeks at a time.

Most report that their water has poor taste or color and 36 percent report they do laundry outside their homes at an average cost of more than $10 per week.

Nearly 18-percent indicate they do not drink from their wells or cisterns, relying instead on expensive bottled water for drinking and cooking. Many boil their water and/or use filters, softeners or bleach to make it more palatable.
